TAMPA, Fla. — Business owners in Tampa are still cleaning up from looting this weekend.

A fire set in a shopping plaza on Fowler Avenue destroyed Champs Sports and its neighbor, Saigon Bay Vietnamese Restaurant.

“It’s so sad. So sad,” said Saigon Bay owner Savy Lam. “Everything is burned inside. Dirty.”

She and her husband took over the restaurant four years ago. Now, there’s not much left but debris.

“You work every day. You put your heart in there. I don’t know how to do deal with this," she told us.

The restaurant burned as looters came into the shopping center, setting the neighboring store on fire.

The flames also affected Malani Jewelers next door.

“It looks very bad for me. I don’t know what to do,” said owner Nooruddin Bhalwani.

Many other businesses on Fowler Ave are now boarded up, either to replace broken windows or to protect from any further looting.

Nearly 40 businesses were attacked in Tampa overall.

Many are able to re-open. But at Saigon Bay, they’re left with little choice but to start over.

Going through the debris, Lam just wanted a few things to keep to go forward with: her lucky Buddha statues.

“I wanted to bring them out. The Buddhas are with me all of the time,” Lam said.

Family of the previous owners who started the restaurant launched a GoFundMe campaign, which has already shown how much the restaurant meant to the community.

“A lot of people support us. Thank you so much,” Lam said.

The owners say they hope to rebuild and reopen as soon as possible. If you’d like to support them, you can donate HERE.
