PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — With a little more than four months until the general election, Bay area supervisors of elections are dealing with some confusing information being mailed to registered voters.

The mailers are coming from nonprofit group The Center for Voter Information. They come complete with a voter registration form and a letter informing the recipient “You may not be registered to vote at your current address.”

Election officials say for people already registered, that’s confusing. Additionally, they say some of the information in the letter is wrong.

“What’s happening is that not only are they using the voter registration application that’s not longer allowed to be used in Florida anymore, it also is sent to voters who are registered to vote or to persons who’ve been deceased, which is really ... that’s really hard to take” said Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Julie Marcus.

We spoke with Center for Voting Information president and CEO Tom Lopach, who says their effort is to get as many people registered to vote as possible.

“So there are times where we miss the mark,” said Lopach. “I think, by and large in this moment, giving voters more information is more helpful than less information."

"This week we spoke with an election office in Manatee County and we’re going continue to work with them on checking our lists and checking our mailings,” he added.

Meanwhile, Marcus says to be sure about your voter registration, check with your county supervisor of elections, and she had a message for CVI and other groups hoping to get more people registered to vote.

“Our message to these types of organizations is if you’re going to do good, then be good at what you do,” she said.
