A man accused of a drunk driving crash that killed an elderly man back in January is heading to prison for 12 years.

Benjamin Ehas came to court Tuesday and pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter. He apologized to the family of the man who was killed on January 9, 2020.

“I’m very sorry for the life I took way too early, and I just hope the family can one day have forgiveness in their hearts.” Ehas said.

It was 11:00 a.m. when Ehas lost control of his pool service truck on Bayshore Boulevard, driving onto the sidewalk and striking 70-year-old George Gage.

The force of the crash sent Gage over the side and into the Bay, where he died.

Police said Ehas' blood alcohol level was .234 – more than three times the legal limit.

Gage's family members told the court, “It is impossible to put into words what your thoughtless, reckless actions on January 9th have done to our family and everyone that was close to George.“

Hillsborough County state attorney Andrew Warren said Ehas’ other charge, vehicular homicide, was merged into the first charge.  He says the victim’s family was satisfied with the outcome.

“We have a long prison sentence that’s appropriate.” Warren said. “We have conditions on probation to follow. We have justice for the victims and his family, and hopefully the community can move on.”

After serving his time, Ehas will serve 42 months on probation.

His driving privileges have been revoked for life.
