TAMAP, Fla. — A USF team is working to incorporate mental health treatments in primary care facilities.

“Generally, people would get a referral to go to a specialist for mental health,” Psychologist Amber Gum said. “But many of them would never go to the specialist.”

To change that she and her team created “myPath,” a free, online training to help people recognize trauma victims and ways to help heal.

“We are hoping everyone can use this tool…especially for individuals who had had trauma and health care providers,” Gum said. “We want to use their feedback on how to tailor this so it can be used at a primary care facility.”

The national institute of mental health says about half of all adults have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lives.
