  • Broderick, a former Travis County Sheriff's Office detective, was armed when captured

  • The three victims have been identified as Amanda Broderick, Willie Simmons III and Alyssa Broderick

The suspect, Stephen Broderick, was taken into custody without incident by Manor police and the Travis County Sheriff's Office. According to Manor Police Department Chief Ryan Phipps, just after 7 a.m. Monday the department received two phone calls about a suspicious man wandering along Kimbro Road, near Manor. Phipps said Broderick had a gun in his waistband at the time of the arrest.

The shooting took place before noon Sunday at the Arboretum Oak Apartments, located at 9617 Great Hills Trail in northwest Austin.

Initially reported as an active shooter situation, the three victims received CPR before being declared deceased at the scene.

Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Broderick and described the shooting as domestic in nature.

Broderick is a former Travis County Sheriff’s Office detective who last summer was taken into custody and charged with child sexual abuse. After posting bond, Stephen Broderick resigned from the office.

The Travis County District Attorney's Office has recommended Broderick be held without bond. The office explained that because Broderick paid his bond related to sexual assault of a child, Texas law permits his detention without bail.

Austin police identified the three victims as Amanda Broderick, Willie Simmons III and Alyssa Broderick. The three victims were found shot lying near two vehicles that appeared to have been involved in a crash.

According to APD, Amanda Broderick and Stephen Broderick were meeting for a scheduled visit with their son. A collision occurred, and Stephen Broderick fired shots, killing all three victims, before fleeing the scene. The couple’s son, who was present during the shooting, but physically unharmed, was later located away from the scene where he was turned over to APD officers.

Elgin ISD released a statement about Willie Simmons and Alyssa Broderick.

“We are heartbroken by the news of this senseless tragedy, and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of Willie Simmons III and Alyssa Broderick,” the statement reads.
