TAMPA, Fla. — The southbound lanes of Interstate 275 were reopened Wednesday morning after an earlier death investigation on the roadway.

Tampa police closed I-275 near Busch Boulevard and directed traffic off at Fowler Avenue in the early-morning hours. The roadway was reopened just before 7 a.m.

Late Tuesday, Tampa police responded to what was originally reported as a vehicle crashing into the guardrail on I-275. 

Officers arrived to find a 2015 blue Dodge with multiple bullet holes resting against the center concrete guardrail. The driver, a 22-year-old man, was found suffering from a gunshot to the upper body.

Tampa Fire Rescue transported the driver to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities did not say if the man was shot while driving on the highway or was shot somewhere else and then crashed while driving.

It is early in the investigation and detectives are working to develop leads to determine where the incident originated and what led to the shooting.
