DAYTON, Ohio  — Nestled in the Oregon District of downtown Dayton stands The Neon, a unique art-house cinema with a rich history and a mission to promote meaningful conversations.

Manager Jonathan McNeal fell in love with the theater nearly two decades ago. He said is a visit to The Neon is different than going to a standard theater.

“The Neon is somewhere I used to come as a film student going to Wright State,” said McNeal. “I grew up in northeast Ohio and there was nothing like it in my neck of the woods.”

With its bold colors and fun design, The Neon is attention grabbing, but it's what is able to be seen inside that's the real draw.

“We show first-run films that are foreign, documentary or independent,” said McNeal. “Still some crowd pleasers in the mix, but not your traditional blockbuster fare.”

McNeal said the goal is to show films that provoke discusson, enlighten viewers and in some cases show an experience that is out of their world.

“I feel that is something that helps build community and helps us get a better understanding of the world and people in it,” said McNeal.

At the concession stand, there are traditional treats with a few specialties on the menu. The Neon offers a full coffee bar, handmade sodas, locally made pastries and locally-brewed beer.

For those not quite comfortable visiting a theater yet, movies can be streamed through The Neon's virtual theater.
