TAMPA, Fla. — They call themselves Digital Detectives.

They have no training, but they do have a lot of time on their hands.

The Gabby Petito case has swept the internet.

From Facebook and Instagram to TikTok, everyone has a theory, but some are finding evidence in the pictures and video.

The latest is a picture posted from a trail camera in Baker, Florida, 500 miles away from the primary search area for Brian Laundrie in Sarasota.

A man turned over video of his trail camera Tuesday morning, claiming he may have captured Laundrie walking through the woods.

Internet detectives pounced, saying there are similarities to Laundrie and the man seen in the video.

But some have taken it further, comparing the backpack seen in the trail camera video, to a picture of Laundrie's backpack inside his van in Utah.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is investigating the report but has not confirmed the man seen in the video is Laundrie.

This isn't the first internet clue that may have helped law enforcement in the investigation.

A Tampa couple says it spotted Laundrie's van in the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

They turned the GoPro video over to the police.

Petito's body was found in the area the van was spotted in late August.

Social Media Professor Andrew Selepak at the University of Florida says online content has allowed people to feel involved in the investigation, but that it may also be complicating law enforcement efforts to investigate.

"What they are getting is a lot of tips," Selepak said. "A lot of information that isn't very helpful or useful, and could potentially make solving any kind of crime or missing persons case more difficult."
