They say the teen pointed what looked like a military-style rifle at passersby and police. Authorities later said the weapon was an airsoft pellet gun.

Police said Alexander King, an 11th-grader at Tarpon Springs High School, was killed. Grief counselors will be at the school today.

The department said 911 calls were received Saturday about “a white male wearing black clothes, walking down the street armed with possibly an AK (military) style rifle, pointing it at everyone.”

It became a scene Annie Appenzeller tried to prevent from spilling over into her business.

“I was actually on Facebook live and my employee who works in the kitchen came running through the front door and goes, ‘There’s a man with a gun outside,’” said Appenzeller, owner of Wine Society.

She said she jumped into action to protect dozens of customers attending a breast cancer awareness fundraiser.

“I was like, ’Cut the music, stop the raffle, lock the front door.’ Ran to the back door, locked the backdoor and just kind of took control of the situation,” she said.

Officers responded, and the department said King pointed the weapon at them. Two officers fired 12 rounds — seven from a patrol rifle and five from an agency handgun.

King was shot by officers and later died at Bayonet Point Hospital, according to a news release.

The release also stated that King had 22 previous interactions with law enforcement before Saturday, and two ended with felony arrests.
