Halloween is creeping up this week. Trick-or-treaters are putting the finishing touches on their costumes but the one question on many minds is what safety measures families should maintain while going door-to-door.

What You Need To Know

  • Outdoor trick-or-treating is one of the safer things families can enjoy this Halloween

  • Children should still wear face masks to minimize COVID risks

Spooky celebrations last year were dialed back for many families because of COVID-19 concerns. This year looks to be a different story. Health experts say it should be safe with a few proper precautions.

“We should think about doing touchless systems still, but still be able to be outside or at the door having fun interacting with these children,” said Dr. Patrick Mularoni, an ER physician at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.

He says the safest activity for kids this Halloween is actually outdoor trick-or-treating, which should come as a relief for many families. With that said, he recommends kids still wear face masks, since children cannot receive COVID vaccinations yet.

“Obviously, we’re in a much better place than we were last year but we’re not out of this yet,” he said. “So those younger children who haven’t gotten their vaccination are still vulnerable to catch this infection. We just all need to do our part but still make it to be a great holiday for these children.”
