CLEARWATER, Fla. — A suspected fatality has been reported after a staircase collapsed at a shared parking garage on Enterprise Road.

St. Pete Fire Rescue said the collapse occurred at 12:21 p.m. Monday in Parking Garage A, located at 2575 Enterprise Road. 

Officials say a total of four landings collapsed, trapping a worker, and that the scene is now a recovery operation.

John Klinefelter, division chief for Clearwater Fire Rescue, which will be the lead agency on the investigation, said work was going on inside the garage.

"It does sound like there was some sort of construction going on on the stairwell when the accident occurred," he said.

Klinefelter said the parking garage was evacuated. He added Monday afternoon that crews will coordinate with police to help people get their vehicles out of the garage as soon as possible.

He also said the stairway was separate from the garage, meaning there was no fear of collapse of the garage itself.

Structural engineers are being called in to asses the damage, Klinefelter said.

Other fire departments across Pinellas County were also called to the accident, however, crews have not been able to enter the scene until the four-story parkng garage is deemed to be safe. 

Tampa Bay Water said the incident happened in a parking garage shared by adjacent properties. It doesn't believe any Tampa Bay Water employees were involved, and there was no disruption in its operations.

The location on Enterprise Road is Tampa Bay Water's administrative office, one of several companies that lease space in the parking garage, a spokesperson for Tampa Bay Water said in a statement. 

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the construction workers and their families as emergency managers respond,” said Tampa Bay Water General Manager Chuck Carden.

No other information has been released at this time.
