TAMPA, Fla. — Construction to widen the I-275 overpass on Floribraska Avenue has Tampa Heights residents waking up to loud noises and minor tremors in their homes.

Some residents fear the vibrations will affect historic homes in the area.

Rick Fernandez says the Florida Department of Transportation sent notices warning of potential effects including noise, issues with lighting and vibration.

“You can feel (the vibration) through the door,” he said.

Fernandez’s partner Connie Rose shot video of a bowl of water vibrating as crews drove piles and drilled rock.

“You can see the water that is rippling in this bowl,” she said.

The couple fears the same waves are going through the foundation of their historic home and could cause damage both outside and inside.

Rose works from home and said the construction disrupts her workspace.

“You can see my commuter just shake like that,” she said.

The home is sentimental to the couple, who grew up in the Tampa Heights community.

“(Rick) said, 'Babe I want to buy a house in my roots,'” Rose said.

Fernandez fears their home will deprecate in value because of the construction.

“The DOT has taken my home without compensation,” he said.

Florida building inspector Jonathan Moore, with InVision Advisors, said vibrations are common.

“We deal with this especially when we are building around other existing structures,” he said. “It’s something to be concerned about.”

Moore explained similar vibrations occurred in historic buildings in Ybor City near the trolley track project.

According to Moore, the tremors were more severe, but they did not damage the buildings.

Moore strongly recommended that homeowners in Tampa Heights take photos and videos of their properties over the duration of construction.

Florida Department of Transportation officials said they set monitors within 100 feet of a project to track vibration.
