WASHINGTON, D.C. — The back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning got their day at the White House on Monday.

President Joe Biden welcomed the team Monday afternoon to celebrate their 2020 and 2021 championship seasons.

"The Cup is in the building," Biden told the crowd that included the team, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor.

The event was held on the South Lawn.

The Bolts won the 2020 title by beating the Dallas Stars. That series was played in Edmonton during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tampa Bay repeated last season, topping the Montreal Canadiens in five games and wrapping up the series at Amalie Arena.

"At the risk of stating the obvious, it's a pretty good time to be a sports fan in Tampa," Biden said, referencing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tampa Bay Rays and their recent success as well. "I don't know what the hell you have in the water down there."

Even though the franchise has won three Stanley Cups, this was the team's first visit to the White House. Their 2003-04 championship was followed by a lockout that canceled an entire season. There was no trip after the 2020 championship because of the pandemic.

Biden saluted the Lightning organization for their contributions in the Tampa community, and he was presented with a Lightning jersey with No. 46.
