DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Investigators released new information about the death of a teen who died while in custody this week.

The 16-year-old suspect was wanted for stabbing a 17 year-old girl. Police say the suspect, Aaron Moten, was found lying face-down in the backyard of a home Tuesday night, and they recognized he was under the influence of something, causing him to behave erratically. 

Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said, “Based on what I was able to review, there was basically no use of force. I was actually very proud of our response because we did have the K-9 deployed the K-9 did not apprehend him whatsoever."

Moten died at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children early Wednesday morning after what police referred to as a medical episode. An autopsy was done Thursday, but police are waiting on results for the official cause of death.

"Because he was in our custody temporarily, we did ask FDLE to come in and take a look just for transparency purposes," Chief Young said. "I'm not concerned as far as what I was able to review as far as our actions on scene and how we handled him."

When asked why he waited a couple days to release this information, Chief Young said he wanted to talk to the suspect’s mother first. Her son was actively listed as a missing juvenile and had an arrest warrant on charges of battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

She asked the body camera video not be released yet, and according to Chief Young she is comfortable with the actions his officers took.

The 17-year-old victim is in stable condition recovering from several stab wounds. Police say she wasn’t cooperative with the investigation likely because of whatever her relationship was to the suspect.
