TAMPA, Fla. —   Tampa police, school officials and community partners are meeting Tuesday to discuss school safety and active shooter response.

The groups will brainstorm on unforeseen events they can plan for now.

Many school districts over the summer trained for major incidents on school campuses, some districts like Pinellas County, even held mock events.

At the same time schools and police are preparing, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas public safety commission is meeting in Sunrise Tuesday. The commission is made up of law enforcement across the state.

The commission will be reviewing the school safety bill, threat assessments and statewide threat management policies.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri is president of the commission and said all of this work is to prevent tragedies like the one in Uvalde, Texas.

"Disgusted by it,” said Gualtieri. “I don't know how else to describe it. It leaves a knot in my gut. Embarrassed by it for law enforcement. And not just that there was an obvious lack of leadership, a lack of command and control, but how can you have so many cops that sit around and didn't override that?"

And that's why Florida schools and police are taking this kind of training so seriously.

One big focus of schools this year is communication on campus during an emergency.

Many districts, including Hillsborough, are now assessing their communications monthly to make sure there are no gaps especially in a critical situation.
