TAMPA, Fla. — A 15-year-old girl was arrested Wednesday after Tampa police say she carried a loaded 9mm handgun onto a high school campus, where she may have had the firearm for the entire school day.

Police say the incident was reported to Hillsborough High School's Resource Officers yesterday afternoon by an anonymous student, and the girl wasn't caught until after the final bell on the schools bus ramp.

Spectrum Bay News 9 is not releasing the name or picture of the student charged.

She faces two gun-related charges, one a felony, for carrying the loaded handgun onto school property.

Police say the 15-year-old was carrying the handgun wrapped in a T-shirt inside her book bag.

In a statement, Tampa Police Chief Mary O'Connor said: "There is no greater priority for our officers than student safety, and we are thankful that our SRO took the information shared with him seriously, taking action to find this student and secure a weapon that could have been used to cause serious harm to others."

The investigation is continuing into why the 15-year-old girl carried the loaded gun onto campus, and where she got it from.

It is unclear if anyone else may face charges.
