When Amanda Simmonds has to pick up her kids from school, she’s had to get creative. She now uses a golf cart to stay off the road.

“We got the golf cart so we can stay safe on the sidewalk, get our kids quickly and not have it take an hour of our day,” Simmonds said.

She’s concerned about the stretch of US 301 between Balm Rd and Big Bend Rd.

Newer developments there like Shady Creek don’t have dedicated lanes or traffic lights to and from 301, creating some hazardous intersections.

“It makes me concerned if people are paying attention. There’s too many distractions coming from too many directions,” Simmonds said.

She also says traffic during school pick up and drop off at Creekside Charter Academy adds to the issues as well.

Spectrum News asked FDOT about this. They say they are now conducting studies of that area.

One solution is to add a traffic light at Ambleside Blvd. FDOT now says they are working on a funding and construction schedule there.

Another solution is a possible traffic light to be added at Shady Preserve Drive, where data showed there were nine crashes over the last five years. The study is expected to be finished at the end of November.

Amanda hopes something like a traffic light can help.

“Knowing that many more, possibly thousands, could be living in these apartment complexes, just makes me concerned that there’s going to be so many more accidents. And the congestion alone, it’s not safe,” Simmonds said.
