What You Need To Know

  • Gina Hoerig's son, Michael, was killed in a car crash along Lutz-Fern Road and the Veterans Expressway in Hillsborough County in late October

  • Since Michael was an organ donor on his driver's license, Hoerig donated her son's kidneys and three other life-saving organs. She asked for one of the kidneys to be donated to her supervisor, who was on dialysis

  • Hoerig wants to continue to help others through her foundation, Strong Like Michael

Michael Hoerig, 20, died at the end of October when a young driver slammed into his truck. It happened along Lutz-Fern Road and the Veterans Expressway in Hillsborough County.

Hoerig was a bodybuilder and his mom, Gina, said he loved helping people.

That's why Gina Hoerig is creating a foundation that's all about giving back. The foundation is called Strong Like Michael.

"He loved deeply and Strong Like Michael is a way for people to find the best in themselves and find whatever path they’re interested in through discipline and hardworking dedication," said Gina. "(They can) achieve greatness on whatever level they think they can do, so if Strong like Michael brings a family together or brings a child to realize his potential, then Strong like Michael has achieved its goal."

Michael Hoerig has already given back. When he got his driver's license, he decided to also become an organ donor. In his death, Hoerig donated his kidneys and three other life-saving organs.

His mom asked for one of the kidneys to go to her supervisor at work who was on dialysis.

"It was very emotional for me," said Anthony Peek, the supervisor who received one of Hoerig's kidneys. "It's humbling for me to accept such a gift."

Hoerig's mom said it gives her a sense of peace to know that her son's kidney is helping her supervisor and friend.

Now, Gina Hoerig wants to continue to help others through the foundation, Strong Like Michael.
