  • Manatee County is reviewing traffic calming procedures

The speed limit of El Conquistador Pkwy in Bradenton is listed at 30 MPH at 61st Ave Dr West, near the Palm Court Villas neighborhood. It varies in other parts of the road, too.

Neighbor Susan Henderson says drivers don’t follow the speed limit, which is frustrating to her as a driver, pedestrian and a bicyclist.

“The nice bike lane there is one of the reasons we chose this community,” Henderson said. “But you’re riding next to people who are going way over the speed limit. That can be very nerve wracking.”

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed speeding is an issue there as the road has become a popular cut-through for drivers. It’s an area deputies now often patrol.

In fact, they issued 42 speeding citations in that area in November alone.

Henderson is grateful for the patrols but she and her neighbors feel more should be done by Manatee County.

“We need some sort of traffic calming along this section. We need stop signs or road humps or maybe even another light somewhere,” Henderson said.

In an email, Bill Logan with Manatee County said there have been requests for speed calming on El Conquistador Pkwy. He says the Public Works Department currently has a request for more stop signs at Palm Court Villas. That request is under review.

In addition, Logan says commissioners will be evaluating county traffic calming procedures in early 2023.
