WASHINGTON, D.C. — Vice President Kamala Harris received an unexpected “gift” on Christmas Eve — several busloads of migrants near her residence in Washington, D.C., according to CNN. The temperature was hovering around 18 degrees when they arrived.

Fingers are pointing at Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, but nothing has been linked to him having any responsibility for Saturday's drop-off.

What You Need To Know

  • Busloads of migrants were dropped off at VP Harris' residence late Saturday on Christmas Eve

  • Some are side eyeing Gov. Abbott as the culprit responsible for sending buses of migrants to Harris' residence

  • CNN reports their team witnessed the drop-off of migrants in freezing weather. Blankets were provided to them later when they were put on another bus

  • CNN said it’s uncertain who’s behind the migrant drop-off at the Naval Observatory

The buses that arrived late Saturday outside the vice president's residence were carrying around 110 to 130 people, according to Tatiana Laborde, managing director of SAMU First Response, a relief agency working with the city of Washington to serve thousands of migrants who have been dropped off in recent months.

CNN reports the first two busloads were left in front of Harris’ home, and more rolled in late Saturday evening. Per CNN, a team of theirs witnessed the drop-off, even claiming to have seen them in only T-shirts out in the cold. Blankets were given to them as they were placed on another bus en route to a local church.

Prepared for Saturday’s drop-off, Amy Fischer, a volunteer with the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network, has gotten used to the arrivals as her organization has been on hand since spring. In a quote to CNN, she said, “The DC community has been welcoming buses from Texas anytime they’ve come since April. Christmas Eve and freezing cold weather is no different,” she said. “We are always here welcoming folks with open arms.”

CNN said it’s uncertain who’s behind the migrant drop-off at the Naval Observatory, but Abbott has taken the reigns in sending buses full of migrants up north on many occasions this year. One drop-off was even outside of Harris’ home.

Although no confirmation has been made by Abbott, Rep. Joaquin Castro strongly expressed his opinion on the matter in a Twitter post Saturday night.

Abbott and three other Republicans have owned up to sending busloads of migrants to the north this year to revolt against the Biden administration’s immigration policies, a CNN report said. He even admitted to doing so in September when buses of migrants were sent to Harris’ residence then.

Republicans argue President Joe Biden and Harris, designated the administration's point person on the root causes of migration, have relaxed restrictions that induced many people to leave their countries of origin. Biden has ended some policies but kept others enacted by former President Donald Trump, whose administration also grappled with spikes in border crossings and at one point separated immigrant families and children as a deterrence initiative.
