PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Some residents in a Lutz neighborhood are asking Pasco County officials to help stop drivers from speeding in their community.

What You Need To Know

  • Some Lutz residents say they are concerned about speeding on Leonard Road near U.S. 41

  • Members of the community say traffic has increased in the area as new developments open

  • Officials say the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office has patrolled the area to crack down on speeders before

James Manser lives off Leonard Road, a straight-away just west of U.S. 41 — an area that has seen a lot of new developments, and the additional traffic they bring.

“We’ve had a really huge increase in traffic,” Manser said. “And with that traffic, we’ve had people driving at very high rates over the speed limit.”

He says traffic especially picked up outside his home when the Long Lake Ranch subdivision opened.

Now, this once quiet 30 mph road is seeing drivers speed through to get in and out of the new development, and Manser says he has already seen a high-speed crash.

“We have families with children. We have pets," he said. "And people are speeding up the road — there’s no regard for the people who live here."

Pasco County Sheriff’s Office officials say they have received complaints about Leonard Road and have done patrols there to address the issue, but admit resources are limited for traffic enforcement.

Manser hopes Pasco County will consider adding some signs or other traffic-calming installations, like speed bumps.

“It’s just outrageous behavior," he said. "And the fact that no one’s doing anything to enforce it, it’s going to get worse until someone probably loses their life."

As of now, county officials say there are no plans for Leonard Road. However, residents can contact customer service at 727-847-2411 to make a request traffic-calming measures.
