TAMPA, Fla. — A free fitness class in the University area is changing the lives of adults with special needs.

Every Tuesday at noon, the University Area Community Development Corporation offers a Fit-Dance class for high-functioning individuals with learning disabilities.

What You Need To Know

  •  High functioning fitness class at University Area CDC is part of the Get Moving Program

  •  There are 14 free classes for children and adults in the University Area through Get Moving Program

  •  The program is funded by a $75 thousand grant from Hillsborough County

Jennifer Foster, 34, has been working out in the class for the last two years. She credits the instructor with helping her lose weight and prevent the onset of diabetes. Her doctor recently told her she was prediabetic. Foster said the journey to a healthier life has not been easy.

"Sometimes it can be frustrating, challenging, but other times it's OK," Foster said. "But I'm very happy for myself. I came a long way."

Administrators at the University Area CDC said the fitness class is all about moving individuals to a healthier lifestyle.

"It's so important to be able to provide opportunities for individuals that are high functioning," said University Area CDC Sarah Combs. "This is a perfect opportunity because it's in a setting where they feel comfortable, the rest of their peers are here and they have a great relationship with their instructor."

The high-functioning fitness class has been growing each year. Now, Combs said it has become so popular, a second class has been added.
