TAMPA, Fla. — The Hillsborough River Reservoir is dwindling by the day because of a lack of rainfall in our area. To address this growing concern, the Tampa Water Department purchased water from Tampa Bay Water to make up for its shortfalls.

What You Need To Know

John Ring is the water production manager with the City of Tampa and says this type of purchase was made last year and in 2017.

“My understanding is that they have a bit of a reserve right now, but as we progress through the next month or so and not to get rain water, that could change the regional picture," he said.

Ring says that the reservoir as at 3 ½ feet below normal levels. Also, with the new water source, residents might notice a difference in taste and smell, which is normal since the water sources are different.

“Instead of drinking Pepsi they will be drinking Coke," Ring said.

The Tampa Water Department says that the difference in smell and taste is perfectly normal and that the water is safe to drink.

The department is also watching the weather forecast closely and hopes rain comes our way soon.

Ring says that while rationing isn’t expected soon, it would be a good idea to just conserve water. This include not watering your grass every day.
