PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Emergency crews responded to a fire at a Dunedin church early Wednesday morning.

According to Dunedin Fire officials, crews responded to a fire at Coastal Christian Church on Bayshore Boulevard just after 3 a.m.

Crews said the flames began in a dumpster before the fire jumped to the adjacent church building.

There were no injuries reported.

Residents who live nearby say at one point they could see flames shooting through parts of the roof.

Crews from Safety Harbor, Dunedin, East Lake Fire Rescue and Pinellas EMS as well as the sheriff’s office all responded to the scene.

The church building and roof appear to have sustained extensive damage. The church also houses the Sweet Peas Preschool.

Although it appears the majority of the damage occurred to the sanctuary, the daycare remains closed but is expected to reopen soon. School officials are reminding the public the Sweet Peas Preschool Largo location is open.

The fire is under investigation.
