The law went into effect July 1 and allows gun owners to carry a concealed weapon without a permit.

Ryan Thomas, owner of Tampa Carry, has been a firearms instructor for 10 years. He said he has been hearing from a number of clients who are already misinterpreting the new law.

“The big thing that I’m noticing is people think this is an open carry bill,” said Thomas. “So they think they are now going to be able to carry that firearm openly and display it to the world.”

Something that is still illegal in Florida. While HB 543 does away with the permit requirement, your weapon must still be concealed and you still can’t bring it into prohibited places like the airport.

As a result, Thomas predicts an uptick in arrests.

Which is why he and other area instructors recommend becoming well versed in the new permitless carry law as well as any other gun laws already on the books.
