TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis will call a special session about the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Spectrum News has learned.

Exactly what that session will look like remains unclear.

The governor wants lawmakers to levy sanctions against Iran, a longtime ally of Hamas, during the four-day special session that will kick off on Nov. 6.

“I can confirm that the strongest sanctions against Iran by any state in the nation, as proposed by Governor Ron DeSantis, will be part of an upcoming special session,” Jeremy Redfern, the governor’s press secretary, said Friday.

The news comes as Florida has been chartering rescue flights in and out of Israel that have returned hundreds of stranded Americans home.

Some, including at least one Jewish Republican, think a special session is more theatrical than useful.

“We have passed laws in this state that will protect Jewish people and Jewish students on campus and they are not being enforced,” said Brevard County State Rep. Randy Fine. “I’d rather see us do that than focus on theatrics in Tallahassee.”

There is at least some bipartisan support for the session.

“Florida’s strong bipartisan support for Israel means our legislature will always be ready to help fight against Hamas terrorism,” said Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book, a Democrat. “I support calls for a special session and look forward to doing all we can to help our friends in Israel.”

Florida’s regular session kicks off in January.
