ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- During this time of social distancing, there are still ways to stay in shape and get outside.

Aimee Conlee knows first-hand about the benefits of paddleboarding.

“Really you get away from everything, so you can really just be completely immersed in nature,” Conlee said. “We’re so fortunate to live in this beautiful area where we have that opportunity.”

It’s what inspired her to create Urban Kai 10 years ago, a fitness-focused paddleboard and kayak company.

“It is really proven that when you’re out there paddling on the water, it just really helps your anxiety and is just relaxing along with getting that physical activity and sunshine, which is really important too, to get some of that Vitamin D,” Conlee explained.

It’s been a helpful activity for many families who are adjusting to a new way of life.

“It’s helpful for parents because parents are put into a really difficult position right now,” Conlee said. “Especially with little ones and trying to keep them active and entertained and also educated, and just all these things at once.”

It’s a low impact workout suitable for all ages. Fitness that’s more like therapy on the water.

St. Petersburg resident Brett Putnam has found paddleboarding to be beneficial during these uncertain times.

“This will be over eventually, and right now it’s tough, but it’s really important to take care of yourself during these tough times. And one of the ways to do that is to get outside and refresh your mind, refresh your body, stay active,” Putnam said.

Now that we’re spending much more time in our homes, it’s a change of pace, and a change of scenery.

“We have manatee, dolphins, sting rays, all types of fish, birds so it’s very therapeutic to be in touch with nature like this and solitary because you have all this space around you.” Conlee said.

A chance to get outside and get moving, while still following all precautions.
