TAMPA, FL. – The Coronavirus pandemic has forced most Americans indoors. During this time of mitigation and “Safer At Home” orders, from counties and states, people young and old are looking for ways to stay active.  Unfortunately, being inside for much of the day and night, we end up just sitting on the couch watching TV, Netlfix (Tiger King anyone) or being on our phones and computers.

But one trainer in Tampa is trying to change that.

His name is Ty Pena. He is a 60-year fitness guru and owner of Parallax Fitness.

The former Marine is used to having big groups of enthusiastic gym-goers at one of his many workout parties.  But now he has shifted from big workout rooms to a small spot of a park with a camera. His goal is to provide valuable workouts to all people staying home in according with CDC guidelines.

"I kind of come up with videos so that they can, periodically throughout the day, look at them and stay in shape,” said Pena, who is a master trainer. “I try to make it simplified, but at the same time, really challenging.”

Pena’s motivation stems from the need for people to take a break from the new reality of everyone in the family being under the same roof.

Some of the wives and husbands are trying to work at home, conference calls, and the kids are running around. They are used to going to a gym for some ‘me time’,” said Pena, who has spoken with several clients about how to stay in shape during this difficult time. “Now they don’t have that. Now when they can take that moment, even if it’s just for ten minutes, to watch that video and participate in the video. At least mental clarity will make them feel a lot better.”

Ten minutes. That is all that is required for anyone to get through one of Pena’s workout videos. And the benefits aren’t just physical, but mental as well. Pena stressed that not having that daily workout routine can force people to become depressed or lose confidence in them.

“I don’t want them to fall into those patterns and become couch potatoes,” said Pena.

What’s happened is more and more people are joining this small digital workout movement. And as long as people keep watching, Pena will keep shooting new workouts. And maybe, this will help bring in more people to the workout world in the future.

“Hopefully this is a wakeup call and that they can view the videos and they can at least sort of start a workout routine for themselves,” said Pena.
