ORLANDO, Fla.— Badminton is not a popular sport in America.

“A lot of people in the US know badminton from the perspective of playing in their back yard or playing at a barbecue,” said Robert Wilson, part-owner of ClearOne Sports Centre.

However, a group in Orlando is trying to change that.

“You’d be surprised the number of people I’ve mentioned badminton to and they would be like what and they then go watch a youtube video and they go oh my god I didn’t know that was the sport of badminton,” said Wilson.

The sport requires skill.

“The players verticals are the same as any top player in volleyball or basketball,” said Wilson.

It’s intense and powerful.

“The endurance that’s required for badminton players is comparable to a marathon runner but the power output is comparable to a sprinter right a the beginning of their sprinting,” said Wilson.

Badminton is often misunderstood.

“If people could understand it better than this is something that I think my kid would be very interested in,” said Wilson.

That’s exactly what has happened at ClearOne Sports Centre

“When he came here we had I think two kids, three or four kids that took lessons. Now we have lessons every day basically,” said Wilson.

That game changer was Head Coach Hendry Winarto.

“I started playing when I was nine years old,” said Henry Winarto, Head Badminton Coach at ClearOne Sports Centre.

Winarto quickly rose to the top, eventually becoming the under 19 champion in Indonesia.

“It would be equivalent of picking some basketball player right now and saying how good are you? Well I’m number one in the United States. Well how good are you? I don’t know but if you’re number one in the United States in basketball, football, baseball,  you get it. You’re very good and Henry was that level of good in Indonesia,” said Wilson.

From player to coach his main goal is to simply grow the game.

“Once you love the game you will try to do what you can do in order to promo the game and bring everyone to a high level,” said Winatro.
