ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Residents in one Zephyrhills mobile home community are spending today cleaning up from Thursday's storms.

Strong winds ripped through Pasco County on Thursday, causing extensive damage in the Forest Lake Estates community.

According to Pasco County Fire Rescue, 80 homes in the park were damaged. Some homes had trees rip right through the structures.

Residents of the mobile home village said they have been through hurricanes and tropical storms but had not seen damage like their homes received Thursday.

Wind ripped up roofs and blew off awnings and tree limbs, and other debris crashed into — and in some cases, through — mobile homes.

County officials said 20 homes had moderate to major damage, and about 55 had some type of minor damage.

There were no injuries.

Vera Slanaker's home was among five houses that sustained the worst damage. With tree limbs inside her family's home, Slanaker's home and the other four have been deemed unsafe.

"We were sitting around watching television, and all of a sudden, we heard a big boom, and a tree fell through three rooms of our house," said Slanaker, who added she had never had a home damaged in her 20 years in Florida.

"We have damage in the living room and both the bedrooms, and it's from floor to ceiling and from outside in. It's going to take quite a bit of work to have it done."

The Slanakers have insurance and plan to rebuild in the community. They said they will stay with a neighbor while their home is repaired.
