Gusty winds at the Clearwater Cove townhomes in the 14000 block of Catalina Circle ripped apart a carport early Friday, sending it crashing into adjacent homes.
At about 5:30 a.m., strong winds swept through the region, toppling the carport. The debris crashed into another building, tearing through screened-in porches and blocking another family from exiting their townhome.
According to Bay News 9 Meteorologist Diane Kacmarik, southwest to west winds will be very strong all day.
The winds have been strong enough to close the Skyway Bridge Friday morning.
"Well I knew it wasn’t my alarm at 5:30 in the morning which is my usual wake up time," said resident Serena Tita. "Just heard huge amount of crash. I mean it just came on to the top floor of my master bedroom.
"I immediately thought it was a tornado because my twin brother and I are survivors of the High Point Tornado that devastated our school years ago. So I have my anxieties with storms."
Maintenance crews cleared the damage later in the morning.
