ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The St. Petersburg man charged in connection with the death of his pregnant wife will remain in jail for now on a $750,000 bond.

  • Bond set at $750,000 for Kamion Spencer
  • Joi Nicole Spencer, 36, died from gunshot wound
  • Baby delivered, in critical condition at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital
  • Husband told police he did not mean to shoot his wife

Kamion Kemarley Spencer was arrested at the couple's home on Trout Drive SE. St. Petersburg Police said he called 911 about 10:40 a.m. Friday to report that his wife, Joi Spencer, had been shot.

The arrest affidavit said she was shot once in the chest but "without intent to murder."

Joi Spencer, 36 years old and seven months pregnant, died from her gunshot.

Doctors delivered the couple's baby boy at the hospital. The baby remains in critical condition at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital with no brain function, hospital officials said.

Police have not released details of what happened in the couple's home at the time of the shooting.

The mother of Joi Spencer said Saturday that her daughter and husband Kamion had a loving relationship and that Joi was looking forward to being a mother. She added that her daughter's death "had to have been an accident."

The arrest report for Kamion Spencer, 36, says he didn't intend to kill his wife. That is why the charge is manslaughter, not murder right now.

Police recovered a handgun at the scene, and noted that Kamion Spencer didn't appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Investigators said Spencer is a possible flight risk because he has ties outside the country.

The judge also said that if Spencer bonds out of jail, he is to have no contact with the baby boy.
