PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Pinellas County drivers are looking for a sign to help prevent crashes.

There are some intersections that are harder to manage than others.

Pinellas County resident Eric Christman knows that first hand.

"The other driver failed to yield at that yield sign, and I didn't have enough time to slam on the brakes or swerve out of the way,” said Christman. “I did attempt to do both."

He's talking about the southbound U.S. 19 frontage road at 66th Street North.

In that crash, he rolled his car and had to be cut out of the car by fire rescue.

That's not an isolated incident because it almost happened again.

"The second incident was the near miss, in which case a friend of mine was driving and a Tesla followed by a Ford F-250,” said Christman. “Both came around the corner at the red light where they had the yield sign, and they didn't stop at all, they just kept on driving."

He says a simple change would keep this from happening to anyone else.

"I would like to see that yield sign eventually get replaced with a red turn signal, allowing drivers to recognize that they need to stop before proceeding into that intersection," said Christman.

Kris Carson with FDOT did some heavy lifting on Eric's concern. She looked back eight years and couldn't put together enough crash data to show a consistent issue regarding failure to yield, and summarized adding a signal here would create a safety hazard for drivers on the frontage road.

That said, the state has agreed that additional signage may help.

“We are proposing to add a yield ahead sign at the beginning of the left turn lane to better warn of the yield condition,” stated Carson.

Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson also asked Florida Highway Patrol about enforcement here, and it is Largo Police who would manage that intersection. Henson has sent Eric’s email on to the department for review.
