TAMPA, Fla. — New details have been released about the shooting death of a Lithia teen, including how his friends might have gotten a hold of the gun.

Christopher Bevan, 15, was arrested Friday on a charge of manslaughter with a firearm in the death of his friend Bradley Hulett, 15.

He mistakenly believed the gun was unloaded and did not mean to shoot Hulett, according to a statement the office of Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren released last week.

Bevan will be prosecuted as an adult, the office said. As of late Tuesday, he had yet to be booked in adult jail. It was uncertain whether he would appear in court for a hearing Wednesday morning.

The shooting occurred at the home of a Tampa police officer, who was not home when the shooting occurred.

According to the report, the four teens went to the home of the Tampa officer after school on December 13, 2019.  The two other teens are not being named in accordance with our Crime Guidelines

According to one of the teens not being named, the three boys went to look for a plunger after Bevan clogged a toilet, while Hulett played a video game on the computer.

The son of the officer, who is 16-years-old, was able to get into the locked master bedroom where the boys continued looking for a plunger in the master bathroom. The teen said Bevan saw the gun on top of a cabinet in the bathroom and removed it from the holster, saying "let's go scare Bradley."

According to the report, the older boy told the others there was no magazine in the gun, but said Bevan asked "what if it's loaded?"

Immediately after, they heard a gunshot.

The 911 call came in just after 4 p.m.

When a Hillsborough sheriff's deputy arrived at the FishHawk Ranch community home, he found Bevan holding a towel to Hulett's head and said that he had pulled the trigger, according to the arrest report.

Hulett was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m. at Brandon Regional Hospital.

Two of the boys gave statements after the deadly shooting, except for Bevan.

However, some of the accounts are conflicting.

According to the statement given by the officer's son, he said he used a paper clip to unlock the master bedroom and when he found the gun, he wanted to show it to Hulett, not scare him.

He said at some point Bevan took the gun out of his hand and wasn't paying attention to what Bevan was doing, but heard the gunshot shortly after.
