BAY AREA — Bay area school districts, businesses and organizations are adjusting their operations as Tropical Storm Elsa approaches Florida.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been extended northward along the west coast of Florida to Suwannee River, including Tampa Bay.

Elsa is forecast to move near or over the west coast of Florida Tuesday and Wednesday.

Based on guidance from county emergency management, the district will take the following actions in an effort to ensure safety for all students and our employees:

Tuesday, July 6, 2021

  • All Summer School sites, HOST, Athletic Programs, and After School Programs will close on Tuesday, July 6 at 1:00 p.m.; 
  • All School and District-based sites will close at 1:00 p.m.

 Wednesday, July 7, 2021

  • All Summer School sites, HOST, Athletic Programs, and After School Programs will be closed on Wednesday, July 7; 
  • All School and District-based sites will be closed.

 Thursday, July 8, 2021

  • Summer School sites, HOST, Athletic Programs, After School programs, School and District sites will reopen.

Tampa International Airport 

Update: Tampa International Airport resumed operations at 8:30 a.m. after assessing impacts from Tropical Storm Elsa.

Pinellas County Schools continues to work closely with Pinellas County Emergency Management to monitor Tropical Storm Elsa and the potential impact on our region.  

 As a coastal community and with the effects of the storm now anticipated to be felt in our area tomorrow afternoon (July 6), in an abundance of caution, all Pinellas County Schools and district offices will be closed on Tuesday, July 6 and Wednesday, July 7, 2021. All summer programming, including after-care/childcare programs and school-related activities are canceled for these days.  

The district anticipates being open and fully operational on Thursday, July 8, 2021.

PASCO COUNTY

Pasco schools: All Pasco County schools and offices will close on Tuesday, July 6 at 3 p.m. and remain closed all day Wednesday, July 7, due to the high probability that Pasco County will experience tropical storm force conditions late Tuesday into Wednesday.

Closures include Extended School Year (ESY), PLACE child care program, STAR, VPK, and Early Head Start.

School-based activities or events planned for the afternoon of Tuesday, July 6, and Wednesday July 7, will also be canceled.

HERNANDO COUNTY

Due to the potential for strong winds and local flooding, district and school sites will close Tuesday, July 6th at 4 p.m. All after-school activities are cancelled and after-care programs will end early. All sites will remain closed Wednesday, July 7th. We expect a full return to normal operation Thursday, July 8th.

POLK COUNTY

Polk County Schools: We're monitoring the path of #HurricaneElsa and working with local emergency personnel. At this time, there are no planned changes to PCPS operations.
We expect to have schools and offices open as normal on Tuesday, July 6 (PCPS will be closed on Monday as part of the Fourth of July holiday weekend).
Please note that PCPS summer school programs are not in session next week (July 5-9), due to a regular break in classes; this is not related to the storm.
Any changes to PCPS operations will be communicated through our website, social media accounts and other channels. Unless otherwise noted, we will be open on Tuesday, July 6.

CITRUS COUNTY

Tropical Storm Elsa is likely to impact Citrus County Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning. The Emergency Management Center has issued a voluntary evacuation for the west side of US 19 and ALL mobile homes, manufactured homes, and recreational vehicles throughout the county.

Due to the potential for strong winds and local flooding, district offices and all school campuses will be closed Wednesday, July 7th. This includes all sites operating summer school, summer camps, and athletics.

We anticipate a full return to normal operations on Thursday July 8th, which includes our summer lunch distribution program from 11am - Noon.

MANATEE COUNTY

All School District of Manatee County employees scheduled to work are expected to report for duty as usual on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Please remember, district employees are working 8-hour days this week.

Summer meal service for students is scheduled to continue through the rest of the week.

The majority of school campuses are closed to students. However, a few schools have been contacting parents regarding specific programs scheduled for their campuses.
