The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission tracks red tide along Florida's coasts. Red tide is a harmful algae bloom that is currrently being found in higher-than-normal concentraions around the Tampa Bay area.
According to the FWC, the species of alga that causes most of the red tides in Florida and the Gulf of Mexico is known as Karenia brevis. As for just how long red tide will be around — it really depends on the situation.
