ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Rowdies fans piled into Al Lang Stadium Sunday night in hopes of watching their team take home a championship trophy.

But as good a time as they had, their spirit was not enough to lift the Rowdies, who fell 3-1 to Orange County SC in the USL Championship Game.

“We’re here to see that win — no other reason,” said one longtime Rowdies fan. “We’ve been tailgating right here for years. This is three generations of Rowdies fan right here.”

Al Lang Stadium was full of fans, dressed in their team color — barbequing, chanting and getting ready for the big game against Orange County for the USL Championship.

“They got in last year. They won. They were supposed to go to the championship, but with COVID they couldn’t play. So, we’re excited to see them out there tonight,” another excited fan said.

They all started circling the stadium hours before the late-night game got started. One family told Spectrum Bay News 9 that supporting his team is about showing love for his city.

“That’s part of the community,” Joe Werner said. “Support the local teams and have everyone feel like they’re a part of something special.”
