FLORIDA — Governor Ron DeSantis is prioritizing the mental health of Florida's first responders.

At an event at the Tampa Firefighters Museum Friday morning, Gov. DeSantis announced $12 million will go toward mental health for those on the front line, saying more first responders lose their life to suicide than on duty.

He also plans to include $1,000 bonuses for all law enforcement, firefighters, and EMTs in next year's budget. DeSantis also proposed a $5,000 signing bonus for anyone who relocates to Florida to be in law enforcement.

During the event, DeSantis spoke about the mental health of emergency workers who responded to the Surfside Condo Collapse.

"It was very, very emotional for the folks that were there responding. It wasn't an easy thing. They poured their heart and soul — and we see it in different aspects of the job. It's not easy.....causes yes... physical burdens.... you're putting yourself out," DeSantis expressed.

The governor also announced a 25% pay increase for state law enforcement staff.
