TAMPA — Over the holiday weekend, Hillsborough County saw massive lines at COVID-19 testing facilities.

More than 32,000 cases were reported on Saturday, and over 31,000 on Friday — those totals are the most the state has ever seen in a single day.

“We wanted to make sure we were all negative before we get together with family,” said resident David Hopes. “We are here to make sure we can do a safe holiday.”

Hopes was one of many people standing in line at the West Tampa testing facility on Sunday morning.

The CDC says vaccinations in Florida are averaging 86,439 doses per day in Florida, largely because of a surge in booster shots.

Right now, 63% of Floridians are fully vaccinated and 28% of those have received booster shots.

With new year festivities around the corner, officials expect these lines to continue throughout the week.
