PALM HARBOR, Fla. — On the last week of school for graduating seniors, Melinda and Janet Liu say their final goodbyes to teachers at Palm Harbor University High School. The sisters are graduating, but neither are seniors.

Melinda is 15 and Janet is 16.

What You Need To Know

  • Melinda Liu, 15, Janet Liu, 16, headed to MIT this fall

  • They are graduating early from Palm Harbor University High School

  • Melinda was also recently selected as a 2022 Presidential Scholar

"So we are both graduating early, so we are both skipping 12th grade," said Melinda. "But on top of that, in elementary school I skipped second and fourth grade. So in total three grades, so that is why I am graduating at 15."

The pair has a long list of accomplishments from starting an Economics Club, launching their own business and even starting a non-profit. So it doesn't surprise many that both were accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“It’s a good feeling, because we have always worked together. So we have been together since fifth grade, since then, we have had our classes together, our extracurriculars together. At home we did things together, if we were baking something, we would do that together as well. So to graduate together and go to college together seems pretty natural for the both of us," said Janet.

Perhaps one of the only differences between the pair is that Melinda was also recently selected as a 2022 Presidential Scholar. Only 161 students in the entire country received that honor — nine in total in Florida.

“So I am just really grateful and really honored to be selected as a Presidential Scholar," said Melinda.

As they prepare for their official graduation Friday, they say goodbye to those they see in the halls. One goodbye is for their Principal Teresa Patterson.

"You are alum. Once a Hurricane, always a Hurricane," said Patterson, with a smile.

She knows how unique this sister duo really is when it comes to the pair both graduating early.

"Very uncommon. Very uncommon, I have only been in secondary education 13 years, but I have never seen this," said Patterson. "Sisters, and MIT!”

The Liu sisters also went to their calculus teacher's room, too.

"We are going to Mrs. Zengal’s class. So she is our math teacher, as well as our economics co-sponsor," said Janet.

"We love her," they said in unison.

Zengel loves them just as much.

“Super proud, and not surprised because they are amazing," she said.

What is also amazing is that neither Janet nor Melinda will hold the titles of valedictorian or salutatorian. Because they graduated early, they had to forfeit that opportunity.

However, they did knock out more AP classes than most.

"In total I took 17 courses," laughed Melinda.

Janet took 16.
