Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson says he will no longer use the nickname AR-15 after a recent string of mass shootings over the last few months.

The nickname was based on his initials and his jersey number, 15.

Richardson said he and his representatives are working on rebranding his nickname. He started an apparel line last year.

“While a nickname is only a nickname and ‘AR-15’ was simply a representation of my initials combined with my jersey number, it is important to me that my name and brand are no longer associated with the semiautomatic rifle that has been used in mass shootings, which I do not condone in any way or form,” Richardson wrote on Twitter and on his website.

Richardson passed for six touchdowns last year and rushed for three more. The sophomore is the front-runner to start behind center for the Gators when their season starts Sept. 3.
