ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Dozens of baby sea turtles were rescued by Sergeant Mackesy, Deputy Lopez and Deputy Wheeler of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) early Tuesday morning.

According to PCSO’s Facebook Page, officials responded to a call early in the morning from a security guard at a hotel on St. Pete Beach concerning sea turtle hatchlings that had gotten very lost while making their maiden voyage out to the ocean.

The security guard had collected about 15 of the baby sea turtles before he called PCSO for additional help, officials said.

PCSO said the hatchlings were found by deputies all over the area, including in the hotel's pool, in the bushes, in the bathroom and the storm drain.

From there, Sergeant Mackesy contacted the on-duty Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation and Commission (FWC) officer who instructed her to release the baby turtles at the water's edge and let them go towards the water on their own, said the sheriff's office.

PCSO said that with some guidance and words of encouragement, all of the hatchlings made their way to the ocean successfully.
