Joel and Jazmine Rondon, both 33 years old, were taken into custody hours after the toddler's death.

Sheriff Grady Judd said the couple went to a Fourth of July celebration in Lakeland with three children, including the toddler, and didn't return home until about 3 a.m. Tuesday.

"The pair consumed alcohol and smoked marijuana while at the party," the sheriff's office said in a news release.

When they returned home, according to Judd, Jazmine told Joel to bring the female toddler inside while she brought the two other children inside. He saw the doors to their car closed and assumed Jazmine had taken the toddler inside, Judd said.

At about 11 a.m. the father asked one of his children to check on the toddler, and realized then that the child was still strapped inside the vehicle.

The couple took the toddler to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, where she was declared dead. Her internal body temperature was 104.4 degrees, authorities said.

The suspects were screened for drugs hours later and tested positive for marijuana and alcohol, authorities said. Joel also tested positive for meth.

The child died of hyperthermia, Judd said.

The suspects were taken into custody on July 6 and booked into the Polk County Jail.
