MEXICO CITY (AP) — Tampa Bay outfielder Randy Arozarena has been arrested in Mexico’s Yucatan state for a situation involving allegations of domestic violence, just two weeks after he won the Babe Ruth award for the Most Valuable Player in the postseason.

The Yucatan state prosecutors’ office confirmed Tuesday that Arozarena was detained “for problems relating to his ex-partner.”

He has not been formally charged yet. Mexican law allows a two-day period for prosecutors to decide whether to bring charges. Normally suspects are held in jail pending that decision.

Arozarena has made no public comment and it was not clear if he had a lawyer yet.

Local media reported that Arozarena married a Colombian woman earlier this month in Merida, the Yucatan state capital.

He hit .377 with 10 homers and 14 RBIs in 20 postseason games for Tampa Bay.

The 25-year-old Arozarena made his major league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2019, appearing in 19 games.

He was traded to the Rays in January and hit seven home runs with a .281 batting average in 76 plate appearances for a Tampa team that went 40-20.

It was the postseason, though, when Arozarena took his game to an entirely new level.

He hit three home runs in the division series win over the New York Yankees and four more in the American League Championship win over the Houston Astros, in which he was named the Most Valuable Player.

In the Rays' six-game loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, he hit three more home runs.

His 10 home runs in the postseason were two more than he had in his brief career.

The Rays didn't have comment when reached Tuesday other than saying they are "keeping up with inquiries" about the incident.
